Innovation Series Event: EntrepreNous:
The Role of Customer Privacy and Trust in Innovation

How social are you? Do you chronicle family life on Facebook and Pinterest? Do you engage and debate others on Twitter? Do you keep potential employers salivating on LinkedIn? Do you use a multitude of apps on your phone to assist you with every form of consumption? Now think, where does this rich digital tapestry of your physical life go once you’ve logged it, and – beyond family and friends – what do others do with it, and what can they subsequently do with you?

From services to apps, the public hunger for social connections and tools is virtually insatiable. However, what is also insatiable is the appetite for customer data – and the more it’s linked to specific people and behaviors, the better. For the business owner, trust is the foundation of the customer relationship. For partners, perpetrators, and even public officials, Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is a cash cow. The sale, theft and regulation of PII are industries onto themselves. Experts in the security and privacy marketplace will discuss the issues and provide guidance to entrepreneurs about the risks and responsibilities of building a business and becoming a custodian of customer data.

Panelists will each give perspectives, from different vantage points, on the data breach epidemic and the gauntlet that entrepreneurs should be prepared to run. Panelist views will range from venture investment in innovation and security, to data breach laws and regulations; to watchdog media; and data security and protective technologies. All the panelists believe the world and business to be a better place with openness and sharing, but that the task is not for the faint of heart.
